I think that the first step would be to sit ...Yes. I think that the first step would be to sit down with your roomates and talk what creates value in your household. Once you have defined that value, start removing anything that is wasteful and doesn't add value.

For example, we as a family want value in the clothing/laundry area. We'd like clean clothes, highly available, organized, no day long laundry chore days, resonanable cost to clean clothes, etc. So, we are removing the waste from the laundry process. We have a process where we do laundry everyday instead of once a week, we learned to make our own detergent and use white vinegar as a fabric softener, dirty clothes come to the laundry daily instead of weekly, and we reduced the distance between each step of washing, drying, folding, etc.

So, pick an area that you can easily measure like groceries and get to work! lafeverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10222684709545024697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4272134501659516910.post-30203283476741133682013-01-05T08:06:22.921-08:002013-01-05T08:06:22.921-08:00Great post! At first Home Depot sold them under the Commercial Electric brand, but tens of thousands of them were coming back and the sales dropped off. So the manufacturer started branding them TCPi and selling them through Home Depot and tens of thousands of them started coming back, with more and more complaints about reliability and lifespan. Now, the SAME manufacturer is selling the bulbs under the brand name Ecosmart. Same crappy product, same results, same lifespan.

To top it off, here in Tennessee the government is subsidizing the purchase of ONLY these bulbs in Home Depot by consumers in a 4 pack for 1 cent if you fill out a form. The price on the bulbs for a 4 pack is supposed to be $6.99.

With a little digging, you can find a 4 pack of GE CFC bulbs in the store for the same price of $6.99, but those bulbs are not offered on the deal at Home Depot.
Want to know why? The reason is that the Ecosmart bulbs are manufactured in China (as are the other two brands) and distributed exclusively via Home Depot. As such, Home Depot makes about 3 times as much money on the Ecosmart bulbs than on the sale of the GE bulbs.

Put all these factors together….Home Depot is using a federal program designed to spur use of CFC’s to make huge profits by selling their proven crappy Chinese bulbs instead of promoting US jobs by including (or, better yet selling exclusively) the sale of the GE bulbs under the federally subsidized program.

Bottom line for Home Depot: it’s ALL about the profit and keeping the stock price up. Sell the sheep the crap Chinese stuff and don’t worry about US manufacturing jobs.

12/31/2011cabeachguyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05283126585850725436noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4272134501659516910.post-58618476268102395942010-08-18T22:35:45.565-07:002010-08-18T22:35:45.565-07:00Hi Dan,

When Tomas, my 5-1/2 year old Bernese Mountain Dog, had to have his front left leg amputated because of bone cancer (osteosarcoma), it was amazing to watch him quickly figure out how to adapt. Within days of the surgery, he adopted a tripod stance moving his right front left to the middle of his body. Tomas, like most dogs, also had a healthy attitude about new things he would encounter: If he couldn't eat it, play with it or pee on it, he'd leave it alone and move on. Several years ago, there was a gas smell in my house. I called the gas company and they turned off my gas and said to fix it before they would turn it on. I called DialOne in Indy and got one then two guys out to service my leak-which was on a Sunday morning in the winter.

After 3 hours, the guys had found nothing after squirting every pipe joint with Dawn. So, I talked to them and told them that I don't know about natural gas but that i did understand troubleshooting and to draw me a picture of what they had done. Once I saw the picture, I realized the solution and told them to disconnect everything from the gas except for the water hearter and furnace. Once they did this, the problem was solved in about 20 minutes. Then they had the nerve to hand me a $1000 bill. We finally settled on $350 but in retrospect, I shouldn't have paid them anything.

After they left, my furnace stopped working that evening. I called my buddy over and we found the problem. The was a quarter inch of Dawn soap in the electronic control board. We cleaned it and gently washed the board bottom and dried it out. After that was all dry, it was fine.

I was not impressed by those DialOne techs. They didn't seem to know much of anything when it came to problem solving.lafeverhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10222684709545024697noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4272134501659516910.post-25966954105344872082008-12-04T07:22:00.000-08:002008-12-04T07:22:00.000-08:00Great Post. This may come off as a self serving response, but you have hit the nail on the head regarding a need to take action.

I own and operate two websites that are designed to help with the exact problem you were faced with. http://www.homeairdirect.com is a site that helps homeowners who just can't afford to pay the extreme prices that HVAC contractors charge. http://www.askboyd.com is an information site that uncovers bad practices by the HVAC industry to try and separate homeowners from their hard earned money.

Your story is very inspirational and I really like your description of the tactic contractors use to discourage homeowners from trying to save money. "FUD" I am going to use that in an article.

I think that the real issue that many contractors overlook, or choose to ignore is that some homeowners are just not able to pay the inflated prices, and therefore must "find a better way".Jayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17809634611535317395noreply@blogger.com
